Can Turmeric Curcumin Improve Heart Health?

Many medications aim to help people with cardiac issues, but what if I told you that taking curcumin will improve your heart even if you are perfectly healthy?

Curcumin is a turmeric extract that is used around the world as a common household spice.1 This yellow herbal supplement is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It's also cardio-protective, so not only is it good for your immune system, but it is also good for your heart!

The protective effects of curcumin on healthy hearts were evaluated in an eight-week study of 59 men and women between the ages of 19 and 29. Each person was randomly assigned to either taking a placebo pill (corn starch), a 50 mg dose of curcumin with 250 mg CurcuWIN®, or a 200 mg dose of curcumin containing 1,000 mg CurcuWIN® three times per day for eight weeks.

CurcuWIN® is a curcumin supplement that contains three active compounds within turmeric: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin.2 Although taking a pill three times per day sounds tedious, curcumin is easy to take, very affordable, and has been shown to effectively support cardiovascular health.

The results of this study were calculated by looking at flow-mediated dilation, which measures the brachial artery and calculates how well endothelial cells are controlling contraction and relaxation of the heart and blood vessels. Each person had their flow-mediated dilation measured before and after the eight-week treatment. The results showed that there was a significant increase in flow-mediated dilation for the individuals given 200 mg curcumin compared to the ones given placebo pills, meaning that curcumin resulted in healthier blood vessels and heart muscles. There was also an increase in flow-mediated dilation for the participants given 50 mg curcumin, although it was only a 1.7% increase compared to a 3% increase with the higher dose.1

Although a 3% improvement in the body’s ability to contract and relax heart muscles does not sound like a lot, a flow-mediated dilation of 6-10% is common in a variety of harmful heart diseases, so any significant increase is very beneficial to cardiovascular health.3 These findings illustrate how easy and helpful taking 200 mg of curcumin every day can be on hearts regardless of whether they are fully functioning or not.

Want to keep your heart healthy with turmeric curcumin? We recommend Vitality Rescue™, an affordable curcumin supplement that contains 250 mg of CurcuWIN® per capsule. It’s also formulated with omega 3 rich tuna oil and black pepper extract to provide additional heart benefits and further aid the absorption of curcumin.
